Body Modification Beliefs and Practices

Although there is a large body of research examining body image, body objectification, self presentation and changing of physical appearance in White college populations, less is know about these factors in racial/ ethnic minority populations. Black college men and women's perceptions of and engagement in body modification procedures is the focus of this study. Their relevance to psychological health outcomes, and influence of cultural values are being explored. This study is being conducted as part of a collaborative effort with the HICI Lab at FIU.

The FMU Psychology Research Lab is committed to exploring psychological and sociocultural factors affect well being outcomes in diverse communities. The FMU Psychology Research Lab was established to provide the students with an opportunity to participate in research development, implementation and results dissemination.

Further, as a FMU undergraduate, you can take part in the kind of unique and forward-looking research that will advance our understanding of college students' well- being. Students have the opportunity to be participants in research studies through their classes or responding to recruitment efforts (e.g. flyers, postings, course announcements) Some research studies are conducted in-person, whereas other studies are conducted online.
